Clowes is the most popular alternative comics artist of the day, and perhaps,
the most popular of his generation. And there's a reason for it. With
his comic Eightball, Clowes tells stories ranging from twisted Mad Magazine-style
humor, to serious and dark studies of the human mind. Clowes' first published
work was Lloyd Llewellyn #1 in 1986. Since then, his work has appeared
almost everywhere, ranging from Twist, Blab, Young Lust, Weirdo, The Village
Voice, National Lampoon, Cracked, Details, and David Greenbergers Duplex
Planet Illustrated. Of course, the bulk of his work has appeared in Eightball,
which has won Clowes countless awards and acclaim. Clowes achieves that
rare combination of a cartoonist that is versatile in both art and writing.
His images range from the overly cartoony to dark and sophisticated. The
same goes for the writing that accompanies his art, which in one story
can make you laugh uproariously, and with the following feature, quiet
you down and make you think.
